Glean America ("we," "us," or "our") is a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting farmers with surplus crops, youth groups seeking service opportunities, and food banks that distribute fresh produce to those in need. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect your personal information when you use our website and services.
Information We Collect
We collect information that you voluntarily provide through our three registration forms:
- Farmer Registration: farm name, contact name, email address, phone number, farm address, acreage, crop types, gleaning availability dates, maximum group size, available facilities, and additional notes.
- Youth Group Registration: organization/group name, group type, leader/contact name, email address, phone number, zip code, group size, age range, and additional notes.
- Food Bank Registration: organization name, organization type, contact name, email address, phone number, address, zip code, operating hours, accepted produce types, storage capabilities, pickup availability, weekly capacity, people served per week, and additional notes.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information you provide solely to fulfill the mission of Glean America:
- Connecting farmers with youth groups interested in gleaning surplus crops
- Connecting gleaning groups with food banks and pantries to distribute harvested produce
- Facilitating communication between registered parties about gleaning opportunities
- Sending you notifications about new gleaning opportunities in your area
- Improving our platform and services
- Responding to your inquiries and providing support
Data Storage and Security
Your data is stored securely using Supabase, a trusted cloud database platform that employs industry-standard encryption, both in transit (TLS/SSL) and at rest. We implement reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect your personal information from unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction.
While we take data security seriously, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security of your information but are committed to protecting it to the best of our ability.
We Do Not Sell Your Data
Glean America will never sell, rent, lease, or trade your personal information to third parties for marketing or any other commercial purpose. Your information is used exclusively to connect farmers, youth groups, and food banks for the purpose of gleaning and reducing food waste.
Data Sharing
We may share limited information between registered parties to facilitate gleaning connections. For example:
- Farm location and crop availability may be visible to registered youth groups searching for gleaning opportunities
- Food bank locations and accepted produce types may be visible to help coordinate produce distribution
- Contact information is shared only when necessary to coordinate a specific gleaning event
We may also disclose your information if required by law or if we believe disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, your safety, or the safety of others.
Cookies
Glean America uses minimal cookies necessary for the basic functionality of our website. We do not use tracking cookies, advertising cookies, or third-party analytics cookies. The cookies we use are:
- Essential cookies: Required for the website to function properly, such as maintaining your session while filling out a registration form.
We do not track your browsing behavior across other websites, and we do not build advertising profiles based on your activity.
Children's Privacy (COPPA Compliance)
Glean America is aware that our services involve youth groups that may include minors under the age of 13. We take the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) seriously and follow these practices:
- We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13
- Our registration forms are designed to be completed by adult leaders, parents, or guardians — not by minors
- Youth group registration collects information about the group and its adult leader, not individual minors
- If we learn that we have inadvertently collected personal information from a child under 13 without parental consent, we will take steps to delete that information promptly
If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at info@gleanamerica.org so we can address the situation.
Data Retention
We retain your personal information for as long as your account remains active or as needed to provide you with our services. If you request deletion of your data, we will remove your information within 30 days, except where we are required by law to retain it.
Inactive registrations (no activity for 24 months) may be archived or removed. We will attempt to notify you before doing so.
Your Rights and Data Requests
You have the right to:
- Request access to the personal information we hold about you
- Request correction of inaccurate or incomplete information
- Request deletion of your personal information
- Request that we restrict the processing of your data
- Withdraw your consent at any time
